What is Threading?
Threading is a method of hair removal. It is used particularly for removing and shaping eyebrows and removing facial hair. In threading, a thin polyester or cotton thread is doubled, then twisted. It is then rolled over the areas of hair, plucking the hair at the follicle level. Unlike tweezing, whereby single hairs are pulled out one at a time, threading can remove short rows of hair. Advantages of threading over tweezing and waxing are that it provides more precise control in shaping and it is gentler on the skin. One of its disadvantages is that it can be painful since several hairs are removed at once, however, this can be minimised if it is carried out correctly with the right amount of pressure.
There are many different techniques for threading. These include the mouth method, the hand method and the neck method. Each technique has its advantages and disadvantages, however, the mouth holding method is regarded to be the fastest and most precise technique. Threading allows for more precise and defined shape and can create better definition for eyebrows. It is also used as a method for removing hair from the entire face and upper lip area. Threading is not a great method for removing arm or leg hair, as the hair in these regions is generally quite coarse and there is too much to remove.
A Brief History of Threading
Although there is no precise date that marks the beginning of threading, it is believed that this practice is around 6,000 years old. Originating from Eastern cultures in Iran and India, threading was a way for women to remove their unwanted hairs and create immaculate eyebrow shapes. It is also thought that Chinese women preferred threading to other methods of hair removal. Threading has been part of age-old traditions and rites of passage. For example, it was thought that eyebrow threading marked a woman’s path into adulthood in Persia. A young woman would have her eyebrows threaded just before she got married to signify her new wifely status. In other parts of Eastern culture, it is said that the shaped eyebrow marked a sign of female virility.
