What is Nail Art?

Nail art, put simply, is the practice of painting decorative designs on your fingernails. It is a fun way to brighten up your everyday look or accessorize for a special occasion. There are many different designs available, ranging from subtle designs to more loud designs.

A Brief History of Nail Art

The nail art craze may be at an all-time high currently with the help of social media. However, long before the internet existed, women were dedicated to keeping their nails perfectly polished. In the 1910s, buffed, clean and short nails were a sign of luxury, as they showed a lack of manual labour, while the 1920s saw an increase in glamour with a coat of clear nail polish. In 1932, Revlon launched its signature red nail polish in 1932 and after that, the half-moon manicure became a major go to style for women. It was not long after that women abandoned short, trendy nails for long, red, almond-shapes in the 40s and 50s, popularised by actresses such as Elizabeth Taylor.

This trend presented a stereotypical feminine style that can be seen in the first seasons of the series Mad Men. Long, baby pink nails achieved their popularity in the 1960s with the help of stars such as Barbra Streisand and Twiggy as well as girl groups like The Supremes. However, once disco came to prominence in the 70s, it was all about the glitter. In the early 80s, OPI was a big player in the increasing popularity of square acrylic nails which were perfect for adding rhinestones and vibrant colours to. The 90s grunge movement saw the emergence of dark colours and the 2000s brought back the French manicure which was originally created in the 70s. However, today it seems as though nothing can beat a set of almond-shaped nails with beautiful nail art designs and sparkles.
