Special Needs Assisting QQI Level 6
The Special Needs Assisting course will give you all the skills, confidence and qualifications necessary to become a Special Needs Assistant. Our tutor will guide you through all aspects of the role and will also provide you with all the support you need to gain your QQI Level 6 Award.
You can complete the Special Needs Assisting course as a stand alone module, which runs one evening per week for eight weeks. At the end of the eight weeks and on completion of your course work, you will be awarded a QQI Level 6 Certificate which will enable you to work as a Special Needs Assistant. You can also complete the module as part of a Major Award in Childcare.
What skills will I gain by completing the Special Need Assisting Course?
- You will become familiar with the main difficulties and disabilities that people with special needs may present.
- You will explore issues relating to integration and inclusion.
- You will learn to stimulate and provide positive learning experiences for young people with specific special needs.
- You will gain the skill to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the relevant concepts, theories and principles underpinning curriculum implementation.
- You will be shown how to create learning opportunities by devising and implementing Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and Individual Behaviour Plans (IBP’s) .
- You will introduce exercises that teach the individual to look after themselves and their property which ultimately encourages independence, respect, self-esteem and responsibility.
- You will be capable of creating and maintaining appropriate relationships with children, their parents, their primary carers, teachers and other professionals.
- You will gain the skills to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
- You will develop an understanding of national and local models of best practice.
- You will learn about health and safety issues particular to children with special needs.
- You will explore attitudes, values and beliefs in relation to disability.
- You will be given practical skills and knowledge in a wide range of behaviours and abilities and assess interventions and behaviour management techniques that may be used.
- You will be taught how to identify strategies for dealing with stressors in the workplace.
Assessment
You will be given assignments to complete as part of your Special Needs Assisting assessment. You will have to complete a project that demonstrates that you have fully understood the course content and know how to apply the principles of Special Needs Assisting in a real life situation. The assessment is divided into two parts, one will focus on your Project work and the other on your Skills Demonstration report.
Your Certificate
Upon completion of this module you will receive a QQI (Quality & Qualifications Ireland) Level 6 Minor Award (6N1957) Special Needs Assisting Certificate. Quality & Qualifications Ireland (QQI) is the national awarding body for further and higher education and training in Ireland. Forus Training is a provider of education and training programmes and we issue certificates to learners who have reached the standard for a QQI award. The certificate you will receive on successful completion of the course and submission of your assignments is a formal confirmation by QQI that you have demonstrated the knowledge, skill and competence required to achieve the named award.
This ensures that your award is nationally and internationally recognised and has many potential uses, for example should you want to continue your studies as part of a major award or to go on to do a course in higher education in Ireland or abroad. The certificate will also be recognised by employers as an award listed on the NFQ (National Framework of Qualifications).

Have completed the Leaving Certificate. and/or Have completed a full Level 5 component certificate. and/or. You may also be eligible if you have relevant life and work experience, in this case you may need to speak to the tutor and discuss your previous work experience or furnish the tutor with a CV and work references. |
Career Path | Having been awarded a Special Needs Assisting Component, students may use this level 6 credit (credit value - 15) towards a QQI Advanced Certificate in Early Childhood Care and Education (6M2007). This course leads to a level 6 award on the National Framework of Qualifications. Students who successfully complete this programme may use their credits towards completing a higher level of study in the area of Childcare. Students who successfully complete this Major Award can also use the Certificate as the basis for entry into selected courses in Third Level Colleges and Universities. |
