Law – Land Law & Succession

The aim of this module is to provide students with a sound knowledge and critical understanding of the fundamental principles of land and succession law currently applicable in Ireland.
This course is an ECTS 15 credit module of the Law Degree.
On completion of this course, students should be able to:
Demonstrate a sound understanding of the origins of land law and its continuing impact on the concept of land ownership;
Distinguish between the different types of land ownership and explain the rights and obligations involved in each case;
Discuss the role of equity across the spectrum of land law including its impact on freehold and leasehold ownership, co-ownership, mortgages, licences, freehold covenants and trusts of land;
Identify and explain the various rights an individual may have over or acquire in the land of another;
Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of the principles of testate and intestate succession in Ireland;
Distinguish between the different systems of land registration in Ireland and recognise the importance of such;
Critically analyse the law and employ knowledge and understanding in solving relevant problems;
Research aspects of land and succession law either independently or as part of a group and communicate findings and proposals in written and/or verbal form.
