Not to mention, the classes are an excellent hobby to have that will allow you to relax and relieve any stress. There are so many mental and physical health benefits to windsurfing. It is also a great way to meet new people, make friends and have fun. The good news is there are tons of windsurfing classes available for a variety of levels and age groups.

What Is Windsurfing?

Windsurfing is a kind of sailing, where a board is powered across the water by the wind. Polynesians have been using boards with sails for over a hundred years. It was not until the 1960s that windsurf board design really developed and it became the sport that we know today. Unlike surfing, windsurfing uses the wind to propel forward whilst surfing uses the force of the waves. This means that you can practice the sport anywhere with water and wind, such as rivers, estuaries, lakes and of course, the open ocean. It was once referred to as being surfing’s ginger haired cousin by the sport’s legend Robby Naish.

Windsurfing grew hugely in popularity during the 1980s when it was estimated that approximately one in every three households in Europe has a windsurf board. Although the sport does resemble surfing in some ways, it is more closely aligned with sailing. Windsurfers refer to themselves as sailors and their rules are very similar to that of sailing racing rules. There are many different disciplines depending on which aspect of the sport excites you – from big-wave to slalom to course racing and freestyle. There is a slightly longer learning curve when it comes to learning how to windsurf. However, one of the greatest things about windsurfing is that it is a sport that can be enjoyed at any age.

Benefits of Windsurfing

There are many mental benefits of windsurfing in that people get outdoors and exercise which results in endorphins and you will get to soak up some Vitamin D which can help to combat depression and relieve stress. Windsurfing is also an excellent workout that will strengthen your core muscle, improve cardiovascular health and increase your cardiovascular endurance. Another excellent benefit of windsurfing is that even beginners get a great workout as it is very accessible, easy and fun to learn. It also burns a lot of calories, making it excellent for weight loss. While windsurfing is a brilliant exercise, it does not feel like exercise which makes it appealing to a lot of people.

What Will I Learn?

You will learn about rigging and the various equipment for windsurfing. You will also learn how to assess weather and tide conditions, how to launch and land and self-rescue techniques. In addition, you will learn how to sail and about the best stance for windsurfing. You will also explore turning in terms of tacking and gybing.
