Course Description

Visual Language & Prjoect Development

National College of Art & Design NCAD

AC04 is a course that consists of guided experimentation with a variety of materials and concepts. Students produce a wide range of work when participating on this course and the collective body of work can include; drawing, installation, bricolage, painting, installation, found objects, video, photography (on mobile phones in a lo-fi manner) and print.

Students have whipped paint onto paper with hand-made horse hair implements, painted with invisible ink, used manikins for installation elements, produced domestic video performance work using mobile phones, designed mermaid costumes, repurposed chairs and filmed graveyards in the snow. This course is suitable for students who want to expand their use of materials and explore conceptual thinking as a way of making art-work. Teaching strategies include; group based, individual tuition and self-directed learning. Assessment is formative and summative. Concepts are developed by exploring individual creativity. The use of visual Mind maps, notebooks and research complements the learning process.

No experience is necessary in this type of approach, though students should be committed to exploring materials and ideas. A Saturday gallery trip to London to visit the Tate Modern and the Saatchi Gallery is an elective element offered to students.
