Key Management Skills: Teamwork, Leadership and Communications – September 2021

Open Training College



This intensive, six week course – the first (or second) module of our 2-module Fast Track management course for PIC’s – will increase your ability to lead, motivate and manage a team in the human services and/or non-profit sector. After completing the certified programme, you will:

  • Understand the factors that determine how you manage
  • Possess the tools needed to evaluate, extend and improve your personal and organisational management capabilities

The course is for current/prospective firstline managers and supervisors looking to enhance their leadership, motivational, team-building and management skills with an accredited programme developed specifically for the social care and non-profit sector.

It is particularly relevant for people engaged in continuing professional development. Upon successful completion, you will receive 10 educational credits towards a Level 6 Applied Management award  – Certificate in Applied Management (Human Services) which can be used as a platform to gain further qualifications.

Blended Approach to Learning

The course uses a ‘blended’ approach which combines online learning, virtual tutorials and face to face workshops.*

◾The traits of an effective leader

◾How to motivate your self and your team
◾The cause and effect of conflict
◾The difference between position and issue in conflict situations
◾The ACT model

Assessment

To complete the course you’ll need to write a 2,000-word paper that explores the relationship between the course materials and your role as a manager. Very much a practical assignment, it will give you the opportunity to evaluate and expand your working practices in an environment where you have access to expert advice and the support of professional contemporaries. Having access to this learning community provides an opportunity to extend your management abilities in a uniquely supportive environment.

Entry Requirements All applicants for this course must: -Be 23 years of age OR - have successfully completed the Leaving Certificate/QQI/FETAC Level 5 Certificate - Applicants are expected to be currently working in the human services, community or not for profit sector and need to be able to apply their learning to an appropriate work setting. - International applicants must provide appropriate documentary evidence of proficiency in English (i.e. IELTS 6.0).
Career Path The course is certified by QQI as a Level 6 Award. Successful participants will be awarded a Certificate in Key Management Skills: Teamwork, Leadership & Communication. Successful participants will hold 10 credits against the Certificate in Applied Management (Human services), which is also Year 1 of the 3 year Level 7 degree course: BA in Applied Management (Human Services)
