A History of Nursing
Although there have been stories of carers from the earliest times it wasn’t until the 19th century that nursing became a secular profession within the health care industry. In the late 1800’s nurses performed little healthcare related work and were relegated to performing domestic duties within hospitals. Hospital nurses completed chores such as washing dishes, sweeping floors, cleaning dining areas and serving meals to patients. It was only during war outbreaks that the nursing role evolved into a profession that encompassed patient treatment because during the war there were so many more injuries and casualties that the medical profession had no choice but to transfer more healthcare related responsibility to the nursing staff.
In Britain, Florence Nightingale helped bring battlefield medical practices up to more modern standards during the Crimean War where she was able to prove that scientific medical practices could improve healthcare conditions for patients. By the British government’s invitation, Nightingale led the first military medical unit into the battlefield. The practices that Nightingale established are guidelines that the modern nursing practice follows to this day.
