What Is Interior Design?

A Brief History of Interior Design

The practice of interior design goes back to the Ancient Egyptians. They decorated their naïve mud homes with basic furnishings enhanced by simple textiles, graphic biographical and spiritual murals, animal skins, sculptures and painted urns.
Ornate gold ornaments found in Egyptian tombs and trinkets highlighted the need for more distinctively rich decoration to symbolize the wealthier and more powerful Egyptians. From this point Roman and Greek civilizations advanced the Egyptian art of interior design, introducing elaborate Greek wooden furniture featuring decorations and Romans focusing on marrying comfort and beauty with home interiors to reflect wealth and status. Romans used furniture made of marble, wood, stone or bronze and used cushions and expressive tapestries.
Both Romans and Greeks introduced wall paintings into spaces. Following on from that point, the Dark Ages was the next interior design period and it introduce minimal and solely practical furnishings, stone-slab flooring and wood panelling. From this point, Europeans took over and introduced colour and decorative ornamentation into rooms. After this, many different styles of interior designing emerged and today, many homeowners design their own homes or hire interior designers.
